Graduates Rise performs at the #altTomatoFest! #RESISTomato

#RESISTomato invites you attend our annual #altTomatoFest event celebrating the diversity of Nashville’s art and activist communities, both important aspects of our city that frankly could not be celebrated with authenticity through the main festival of tomatoes. #RESISTomato chooses to enhance the main festival by providing a free platform to artists and performers from under-represented groups to share their work. This year, #RESISTomato showcases various intersectional artists including people of color, gender non-conformers, people with disabilities, first generation Americans, survivors of childhood poverty and trauma, and survivors of sexual assault. #RESISTomato also provides free table space for some of the most progressive advocacy groups working hard to improve the quality of life for all Nashvillians. Attendees are encouraged to come and find out more so they can get involved.
There will be musical performances by Graduates Rise, a punk band fronted by a Professor of Social Work from Tennessee State University; local favorite and artistic powerhouse Fauna Halo; Estina and the Black Sheep, a local indie rock band fronted by a first-generation American; singer songwriter and Empower TN Board Member Sarah Cait Rayman; Cybelle Elena, one of the hardest working women in Nashville and co-creator of the HonkyTonkBadonkadonk zine; Islamic singer, songwriter, musician, and actress Iman Nadeem; Sarah Eitel, who can usually be seen playing guitar with Hurts to Laugh and the Dead Deads performs her solo material; Nashville newcomer DJ Theresa Shultz; all lady punk band Hungry Mother; and the always unique psychedelic sludge rockers Flummox fronted by Alyson (Blake) Dellinger.
Other performances include stand-up comedy from Courtney Warner; Britt Beer, and Dawn Merrow; storytelling from Kristen Chapman-Gibbons; and poetry readings from award-winning poets TJ Jarrett and Sir-Reyna Lucio; our fearless trans organizer Samantha Rae MacAlpine; the gifted and talented Kat Marsh; and April Meredith, who works year round to empower people with disabilities across the state.
Representatives from various community organizations will also be onsite to provide information about the services and supports they offer to Nashvillians and about how you can get involved including: Fair Funding for TSU, United Campus Workers, Enough is Enough, Silent No Longer, Nashville Justice League, Central Labor Council, Worker’s Dignity, Launch Pad, The TN Holler, Souls United, Neon Guard Nashville, Poverty and the Arts, Dangerous Ideas Collective, TN Anti-Racist Network, Nashville Peace & Justice Center, Music City Rider’s United, Our Revolution, Gideon’s Army, The Women’s March – Power Together TN, Black Lives Matter Nashville, Showing Up for Racial Justice Nashville, and Jessi Zazu, Inc.
Other activities include face painting by the Makeup Ninja Jaiya Wendell; an art-making station hosted by Poverty and the Arts; a zine-making station hosted by Nashville’s HonkyTonkBadonkadonk zine, and a kid’s activity zone hosted by Beth Fox.
Finally, this event will celebrate the release of “You Might be a Riot Grrrl if…” a new zine created by our event hostess Sarah Walton to feature Dr. Cyn’s “Riot Grrrl Manifesto: An Update for the Digital Age.”
There will be a rolling potluck, meaning guests are invited to bring various dishes or any other picnic related supplies they choose throughout the day. We will also have two charcoal grills set up, one for herbivores and one for carnivores. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs/blankets, snacks, beverages, coolers, food for the grill, and/or items for the rolling potluck. Trash and recycling containers will be provided on site.
Also, you may want to bring cash should you want to buy merch from our artists and/or to make donations to the organizations present. Some of our artists may also take credit cards.
This event is free, for all ages, and open to the public. The home is located at the corner of Holly St. and S. 14th. You may enter, drop people off, or unload via the back alley off Holly St. It is expected to be tight so we suggest carpooling. Parking is available along the streets in the neighborhood as posted by the city.
